Nyingma worldwide
Unlike
the other lineages the Nyingma school did not have an overall head
until after the Chinese invasion of Tibet but was led by six great
monasteries - Dorje
Drag and Mindrolling in the upper region, Shechen and Dzogchen in the
center, and Kathok and Palyul in the lower part of Tibet. After the
Chinese invasion the leaders of these monasteries were forced to flee
from Tibet and decided to elect a head of the lineage. The first of
these was H.H. Dudjom Rinpoche who was followed by H.H. Dilgo Khyentse.
Since 2001 the current head is His Holiness the XIth
Mindrolling Trichen who is based at:
